High school dropout rate rings alarm bells

Over 100,000 students drop out of school each year in Thailand because they are either bored with studies or want to escape from other problems like drug addiction and premature pregnancy, the Basic Education Commission (BEC) has found.BEC secretary-general Kasama Varavarn said most of the dropouts are lower primary school students (Mathayom 1-3). She has instructed all the school districts to take the issue seriously given the sheer number of dropouts.

Hundred thousand drop outs seems like a high number to me.

Being an unskilled, unemployed drop out is probably the worst scenario for many Thai youth.

The school system sucks here, need less to say, but at least it looks like the government is paying attention to the problem.
