Balanced Look at Thailand's Economy

Thailand's new economic logic

By Shawn W Crispin

Asian Times

BANGKOK - Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont says his interim government has launched a "year of great reforms", with changes aimed at putting the economy on a more sustainable long-term track. Many foreign investors, on the other hand, are howling that recent government policies are woefully out of step with market mechanisms and, if not reversed, could eventually cause Thailand's economic demise.

I think it is a real pity that the Thai is so disposed to dishonesty. It is a weakness anda sign of deeply insecure and immature society. The politicians, in common with the people in the street lie as a first option as to their intentions, in order to conceal them. Secrecy and duplicity go hand in hand and the Thai is adept at both, alarmingly so sometimes. So it is also with the Government. As a resident of Thailand who has lived under both the Junta and the Thaksin regime, I view the Junta more forgivingly than most external commentators. However, having deposed a man who was probably the most corrupt and dishonest man I have ever encountered on 4 continents, I just wish the Thai would find someone they trust to explain why honesty and integrity are values highly regarded in the West and amost completely disregarded in Thailand.

I think you are a wise person. I don't think Thais are inherently dishonest. The problem is that from the street to the highest offices they have to be dishonest to survive.

I am sure there are honest bureaucrats, officials and cops, but these people never get advanced, because they are not playing by the rules of advancement, which is to pay off the boss.

Another problem is that the masses follow and admire charlatan like Thaksin, who is everything you said and more. I am glad he got run out of the country, but it looks like the boys who are replacing him are not going to be much better.
