Thailand is Blocking You Tube

Why is Thailand blocking You Tube?

I haven't had access to You Tube since last night.

I use it for work unrelated to this site.

Boing Boing blogged about it here

Personal Thailand here

Fact Freedom against censorship here

4am Expat here

In the last few minutes I got access to You Tube back. I would say it was blocked for the last 14 hours or so.

probably someone got it wrong. Never attribute to malice what is adequately exlained by incompetence. a very important aphorism in Thailand.

I remember seeing some very sharp criticisms of Saprang and Prem uploaded onto YouTube.

That probably is enough for the entire site to be classified as "not contributing to the public morality."

Next up for censorship: Google! Why? Well, somebody uploaded a Thai translation of Chapter 15 of The King Never Smiles onto googlepages. It's at:

http://TKNSthai.googlepages.com

Chapter 15 is all about Prem and events during the 1980's.

Not a bad translation, if I do say so for myself, although the title is changed to สวรรค์ในอก นรกในใจ and the title of Chapter 15 to น้ำพึ่งเรือ-เสือพึ่งป่า

I don't think that youtube is completely uncensored now. Some articles about Thai naughty nightlife and opinions about the coup mysteriously won't load. The player says it's loading, but nothing happens.

I'm in Thailand, on TRUE and this is one of the videos that won't work here.

YouTube isn't blocked. For the past week, there have been some serious problems with DNS, so far as I can tell at True. On at least two occasions this week, the Bangkok Post has been unreachable for seven, and then for four hours. It's not censorship, it's not the government. The problem is inside True.

I have TOT, which I admit is a crappy ISP.

I didn't have access to Yahoo for 3 weeks or so.

This is the first time I've been directed to this site from another website.

The only other problem I've had was that my link to the 1997 constitution was deactivated by the host. A reader told me that and I have found a non-Thai hosted source for the constitution.
